In many communities, anchor institutions – colleges, universities and major health care organizations – play important roles supporting local housing needs. As the Jessie Ball duPont Fund explored strategies for enhancing housing opportunities, we turned to the Kirwan Institute at Ohio State University to learn more about these initiatives.
“Stable and affordable housing is essential to educational success and positive health outcomes for families and for communities,” Kirwan reports. “Community anchor institutions, such as educational entities (particularly higher education) and health care organizations can be powerful institutional resources to support equitable housing and community development.”
Kirwan’s report — Anchoring Equitable Development: Anchor Institute-Led Models of Housing & Community Development to Strengthen Institutions and Communities — provides a series of case studies and summarizes models that can be potentially transformative in Jacksonville and other communities.
