The Jessie Ball duPont Fund will join White Stone (Virginia) United Methodist Church, local funders and the Middlesex County public schools to establish a pre-school classroom for at-risk three-year-old students in Middlesex County in the Northern Neck of Virginia.
The Jessie Ball duPont Fund trustees awarded $50,000 to White Stone United Methodist Church to support the effort. The grant was among 24 awards valued at $1.9 million made by the trustees during their summer meeting.
In the largely rural Northern Neck, pre-school opportunities for low-income children are limited. In recent years, the Jessie Ball duPont Fund has partnered with local organizations and the Lancaster County public schools to establish two pre-school classrooms for three-year-old students in an effort to better prepare these children for success in Kindergarten and first grade.
Members of White Stone United Methodist Church, which is located in Lancaster County, saw the opportunity to extend the practice to Middlesex County. The Middlesex classroom, which will be modeled after that in Lancaster County, is scheduled to open in fall 2016.
